INMETRO – Certification for Explosive Atmospheres in Brazil
In Brazil, equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres requires mandatory third-party certification to confirm compliance with the relevant INMETRO Ordinance No. 115/2022.
Legislation Requirements
INMETRO serves as the implementing regulation within Brazilian law, with INMETRO (Brazilian National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology) overseeing standardization and certification body authorization. Certification of equipment for the Brazilian market, often referred to as 'INMETRO certification,' is mandatory.
The relevant legislation, ordinance No. 115 from 2022/03/21, covers:
- All electrical equipment or components intended for use in Explosive Atmospheres in Brazil.
- Manufacturing facilities for these products.
Technical Requirements
Technical requirements for equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres closely align with international IEC standards, complemented by relevant Brazilian national requirements and considerations from the IECEx Scheme.
There are specific testing requirements under the INMETRO scheme. Test reports from international laboratories outside Brazil are accepted if issued by an ILAC accredited facility.
Certification according to INMETRO 115 is mandatory for suppliers targeting the Brazilian market.
Related Standards
In most cases, conformity is presumed based on IECEx certification to current editions of relevant IEC standards for protection methods. Certifications to EN standards (ATEX) or older IEC standards may require a gap assessment against current requirements.
The conformity assessment structure resembles IECEx and ATEX certifications, requiring prototype design approval and manufacturer production control. A local representative, acting as the legal importer in Brazil, must be identified during certification.
